Freelance Editing Rates

Before I give my rates, I’d like to mention that I used the Editorial Freelancers Association rates page as a guide toward setting my own editorial rates (though mine are much lower than the standard rate they quote–most new writers cannot afford such costs!). Also, although the rates listed there are fair market, they are not easy to calculate when it’s listed per hour, so I have changed it to per page below (minus the coaching services).

I break down what you’d get for the price, but feel free to reach out to me with questions. The price-per page is based on a Times New Roman, 12pt font, double spaced, with 1 inch margins per page novel. If your book doesn’t come to me in this format, I will make it this way so the price is even across the board.

Coaching

This will involve writing exercises, prompts, Zoom sessions, and thorough read-throughs of your work to teach you along the way how best to edit, revise, and write on your own. Coaching also includes developmental edits (below). We will set reachable, challenging deadlines and goals, and I will work the amount of hours a week that YOU can afford, based on our current goals (which we will put in place as a team ahead of time) so you leave my services with a complete, developmentally edited manuscript: $65/hr.

Full Developmental Editing

Full developmental editing (I would read the whole manuscript, then make an editing letter of plot weaknesses, points that have to be addressed, and inconsistencies. I’d send those back to you, allow you to do the work, and then review your changes and make in line edits with track changes on): $3.50-$4.50 a page (depending on content and work needed).

In-line edits (I’ll fix grammatical mistakes with track changes on, and point out inconsistencies in comments if I happen to spot them but no edit letter will be created and the focus will be on cleaning up the book itself): $2.00-$3.00 a page (depending on content and work needed).

Simple Proofreading

Simple proofreading (I’ll only look for typos, missing punctuation, or overall grammar issues such as incomplete thoughts and missing words with in-line edits and track changes with no comments at all throughout): $1.50-$2.75 a page (depending on content and work needed).

Availability is, of course, dependent on my schedule. Other services might be available, such as reviewing your outline for plot, pacing, etc, if you start another book, so never hesitate to ask!
